Since the start of the Russian invasion, the number of women wanting to join the Ukrainian armed forces has risen significantly. Previously, the Ukrainian army consisted almost exclusively of men, but now the situation is changing. Women are not only helping behind the scenes, but are also actively participating in combat operations.

Today, on 8 March, it is noteworthy that the concept of gender inequality is losing its significance. Ukrainian women in military uniforms are becoming an increasingly common sight.
To assess the situation, we should compare, for example, how the number of women in the armed forces has changed since the start of the Russian invasion. In 2014, there were up to 50,000 women in the Ukrainian army, 16,600 of whom were soldiers. According to the Military Media Center, a total of 62,000 people will be serving in the Ukrainian armed forces by the beginning of 2024, including 45,587 female soldiers.
Ukrainian women embody natural tenderness, strength of will, incredible courage and tender care. What our women are capable of achieving deserves special recognition. We thank you for loyally defending Ukraine and heroically giving birth to Cossacks, for defending the rights and freedom of your people despite all adversities. I am infinitely grateful and proud of you!
Happy International Women’s Day!
